Hey everyone! It's been awhile, but I'm back. I'm relaunching my blog. "Growler Eats" is now "Chow with Xhico". I've been cooking up a storm and eating a ton as usual. I have so much to share - recipes, cooking class news and a private pop-up dinner party coming up soon in Los Angeles.

Quesadilla Blues

You might the quesadilla blues is going to be a sad story. It's not. It's about some of the most delicious quesadillas in Los Angeles.

If you want some of the best quesadillas in LA, you have to go to the blue corn quesadilla lady in Echo Park. She's right off Sunset Blvd on Echo Park Blvd. to the west most weekdays for lunch. Look for the cart with the rainbow umbrella at the edge of the parking lot behind El Clasico Tattoo.

She makes fresh blue corn tortillas by hand then fills them with cheese and other goodies. Definitely try the Papas con Chorizo (Potato and Mexican sausage). The squash blossom and mushroom are grub too! You can also get a danger dog (LA street hog dog wrapped in bacon). Eat in LA for under $5. Oh yeah.

Halloween Projection Art at Berlin Currywurst

I will be exhibiting my projection art on the streets of Los Angeles for Halloween. I will be showing video art from "Return of the Dark Owl" and "The Fold" tomorrow night at Berlin Currywurst in Los Angeles. Come out and see my spooky art come alive on the walls. Meatland Bakery? Wah?

With a name like "Meatland Bakery" and the product described as "Sweet Bread and French Rolls", I am wondering what kind of sweet bread it is... "Wheatland Bakery" may have been a better choice for branding.

Grub on Vegan Burgers

I'm generally not a fan of vegan restaurants, tho I love my veggies. But if you're a meat eater and ever dragged to Flore in Silver Lake, go for the BBQ Bacon Sliders. The patty is made of black beans and it is delicious. I'll be back for more.

Street Fried Quesadilla

I left this art show in Echo Park last night. I was starving and my favorite blue corn quesadilla lady wasn't around. But I saw a woman kitty corner at the intersection with a small cart and steam rising above her. I couldn't wait for the lit red hand to change to the walk signal and I crossed toward her.


I heard her saying, "quesadillas" as I approached. When I go there I saw what seemed to be more of giant empanadas. But they were more of a deep fried quesadilla. She made a tortilla like shape out of dough and stuffed them with cheese and potatoes (she also had cheese and chorizo or just cheese). She folded it in half and dropped it in the hot oil. She then served it to me, what i call, pupusa style - topped with cabbage, sour cream and crumbled cheese. Then she had all these delicious salsas to choose from... Avocado, Tomatillo, Salsa Roja and Habanero, which was pretty spicy. Overall it was delicious but a little messy. I could have used a knife.
